Are you thinking about a career in music education? What type of career in music education are you thinking of training for? There are many different types of music education careers to choose from.

The first music education career that many people think of when they hear the words music education careers is music education teacher to students in music education in public schools. Elementary music education teacher teach general music classes in kindergarten music education through the sixth grade. If you choose this music education career, you will be teaching young, impressionable children to understand and appreciate music. Elementary music education teacher sounds like an interesting and rewarding career.

Secondary school music education jobs can vary widely depending on the size of the school's music education program. A secondary music education teacher may teach specifically on one instrument or many. Other music education teachers may be responsible for leading a school band, orchestra or choir, and putting on school activities such as concerts and competitions. Secondary music education teachers may handle rehearsals and conduct school groups as well.

At the college or university level, music educators may be hired for a variety of different positions. One could be a general music educator teaching in areas of music theory, music arranging, music history and vocal or instrumental performance. Educators are also hired to coach chamber music groups or to conduct choruses and orchestras.

Private music instructors give individual instruction to students on a regular basis. Private music instructors set their own fees unless they contract with a music store or other group. Private music instructors develop their own teaching plans and guidelines. Private music instructors may teach individual lessons or group lessons. Private music instructors may teach at different levels of skill, from beginners to professionals.

Choir directors provide direction and guidance to a vocal group or choir in a school, church or a community. The choir director is responsible for researching and selecting material, rehearsing and conducting the choir and preparing the choir for public performances.

Music therapists use music as an aid in healing, relieving pain, providing emotional comfort, and entertaining patients with various mental and physical health related ailments. A music therapist develops a treatment plan and applies various strategic techniques to improve the life of patients who are at various stages of illness and recovery.

Music therapists work either freelance or in clinical settings such as hospitals, nursing homes, psychiatric centers, pain management treatment centers, oncology centers, drug treatment programs, correctional facilities and hospice care programs. Some school districts use music therapy in special education programs.

There are many music education careers available for those who wish to pursue a career involving music. You need to have a love for music and a desire to commit to it. With a music education career, you can be doing something you love and affect other people in a variety of different ways through music education jobs.
