The Growth Of Distance Education
from: Kyle BesserIn pre-industrial Europe, education was available primarily to males in the higher levels of society. The most effective form of instruction in those days was to have the students together in one place at the same time to learn from one instructor. This form of traditional educational remains the model today.
Distance education is not a new concept. Early efforts of educators to establish alternatives were not accepted well. Correspondence study, which was designed to provide educational opportunities for those who were not among the elite and who could not afford to attend an educational institution, offended the elite and was viewed as inferior education.
When radio was developed during the First World War and television in the 1950s, correspondence study took a new turn. Instruction outside of the traditional classroom found new delivery systems. Radio and television were used by schools to deliver long distance learning.
More recently, audio and computer teleconferencing were used to deliver instruction in public schools, higher education, the military, business and industry. As technology developed, innovative uses of media provided the means for more effective long distance learning.
With the rapid growth of new technologies and the development of systems for delivering distance learning information, distance education took off. Today there are distance education courses offered by dozens of public and private organizations and institutions, large corporations, school districts, universities, and the military. Direct satellite broadcasts are produced by more than 20 of the country's major universities. More than 40 billion dollars a year are spent by IBM, Kodak, and the Fortune 500 companies on long distance learning.
Distance education was traditionally defined as instruction through print or electronic communication media to persons engaged in planned learning in a place or time different from that of the instructor or instructors. The traditional definition of distance education is changing as new technology allows educators to develop and expand methods of presenting long distance learning. Interest in the unlimited possibilities for individualized distance learning grows with the development of each new communication technology.
The rapid development and availability of computer technologies captured the interest of the public and is responsible for much growth distance education is experiencing.
