The Distance Education And Training Council

from: Kyle Besser

Distance education sounds like a wonderful alternative to traditional formal education systems. Distance education offers freedom from scheduled classes and the need to be physically present in a classroom. These conveniences can be the propelling factors for one to be able to pursue higher educational opportunities.

You may be wondering if these distance education programs are too good to be true. Is it really possible to learn as effectively through distance education online course versus the traditional classroom experience? If so, what does this mean for the changing climate of the educational world? Who regulates distance education programs?

The Distance Education and Training Council (DETC) is a non-profit educational accreditation agency in the United States specializing in the accreditation of distance education institutions. DETC was established in 1926 and is recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation and the United States Department of Education as an accreditor of institutions of higher education. DETC was founded to promote sound educational standards and ethical business practices within the correspondence field.

The independent Accrediting Commission of the DETC was established in 1955. Shortly after it gained the approval of the US Department of Education as a nationally recognized accrediting agency under the terms of Public Law. The Accrediting Commission is also recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA). The Commission is dedicated to fostering quality assurance, protection of the rights of the students and institutional self-improvement through voluntary accreditation via peer evaluation.

Distance education institutions are regulated as any other educational institution is regulated. The purpose of regulation is to ensure the quality of education. Depending on what school, program or institute is offering the distance education program, regulation standards can vary just as they do for traditional institutions.

Institutions are placed in different categories, such as junior colleges, private colleges, and universities. The distance education field has similar categories. Some distance education programs offer single classes for specialized interests while others offer full accredited distance learning advanced degrees. Regulation is important regardless of the distance education program subcategory.

The Distance Education and Training Council works diligently to ensure that the quality of distance education programs meet their standards. The goal of the DETC is to provide the public with education that is both rewarding and valuable.

Because the demand for distance education is growing rapidly, the number of distance online programs are growing as well. More programs are being created, expanded and improved than ever before. With higher demand, higher standards can be set. The average mean of classroom achievement is increased across the board, and institutions with exceptional teaching credentials are becoming more selective about the students they accept or deny. This in turn raises the bar for all distance education programs.

Without the Distance Education and Training Council the public might not have any means to be able to distinguish between reputable online accredited distance learning programs and the programs that are just taking your money and have no real value. The Distance Education and Training Council is working hard to ensure the public receives quality accredited distance learning.
