Massage Continuing Education Classes

from: Kyle Besser

Therapeutic massage therapy is one of the many branches of the healing arts. A practitioner of massage therapy uses the hands to massage a body into deep relaxation to relieve tension, stimulate blood circulation, soothe sore muscles and ease injuries. Those seeking a career in massage therapy must first become certified through an accredited program to become licensed in their state of practice. After that, massage therapy practitioners must take massage therapy continuing education classes to keep their license.

Regulations and guidelines on massage therapy differ from state to state. Massage therapy continuing education enables massage therapy practitioners to stay informed of these regulations as well as any new changes in state and local guidelines that may affect their practice. A certain numbers of massage therapy continuing education hours must be documented with the state in which the therapist practices. Local ordinances, if any, will also need to be followed for a massage therapist to practice legally.

The following are some examples of courses of study that a massage therapy practitioner may find in assage therapy continuing education:

*Boundary training - developing a scope of practice that sets boundaries between the massage therapy practitioner and the patient

*Ethics - managing clinical dilemmas, reporting abuse and insurance billing

*Licensing - state and local regulations requirements

*Ergonomics - proper techniques and equipment

*Rehabilitation - working with shoulder injuries, sports medicine and massage

*Anatomy - recognizing major muscle groups and structure, tendons and range of movement

Massage therapy continuing education classes are credited in hours and reported to the state board by the accredited program attended by the massage therapist. This ensures that the practitioner is in keeping with the rules and regulations set forth in their state of practice. A massage therapist who is not in keeping with the requirements of their state will have their license to practice revoked.

Massage therapy continuing education classes can be found online and provided through many accredited and reputable schools and organizations. Online massage therapy continuing education courses provide opportunities for those who practice massage therapy to maintain their licenses with the state board of their state of residence without having to attend traditional classes. The pace of online massage therapy continuing education classes are usually set by the student, so this can be a good choice option for the busy professional to fulfil licensing requirements without losing time from a busy schedule. Many states also offer the option to renew a massage therapy license online.
