The 4th "R" In Education
Education has traditionally revolved around three Rs - Reading, wRiting and aRithmetic. A fourth "r" is coming into focus - aRt. Art has been part of the K-12 curriculum for many years but not considered one of the core subjects and usually considered an elective in the upper grades. In recent years researchers and educators have shown the positive influence the arts have on overall student learning, and more effort has been made to make art part of the core curriculum.
Art education can lead to many career choices. Writing, poetry, painting, sculpture, music, dance and storytelling are all forms of expression and communication. Separately or combined, art education creates a diverse array of opportunities for art education and possible careers, including art education teacher. Art education teachers are needed on all levels of education.
Writing
There's a saying that writers are made, not born. There are numerous writers and authors with no formal training. Writing is an art form, a craft and a gift.
Poetry
Poetry is a well known and much loved form of art. Poets speak in a language all their own.
Painting and Sculpture
Water colors, oils, marble and clay are all intricate tools of the artists who use painting or sculpture to communicate their thoughts and ideas.
Music
Music is an art form in and of itself. Writing, reading, recording and teaching music are all possible careers in music.
Dance
Dance has been part of man's cultures throughout history. Dance has been used to celebrate victories, mourn losses and tell stories. Teaching dance is also an art education career.
Storytelling
Storytelling is more than just reading from a book. Telling a good story invokes all of the senses.
